How to renew your Nigerian passport in the UK: a step-by-step guide

Renewing a Nigerian passport in the UK is done through the Nigeria High Commission in London, and much of it starts online. This guide is based on the High Commission’s own requirements. Always check that page before you apply, as rules change.

Step 1: Apply and pay online

  1. Fill in the application on the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) international passport portal: passportintl.immigration.gov.ng.
  2. Pay the passport fee online and print your payment slip and application form.
  3. Book an appointment at appointments.immigration.gov.ng and print the booking.

Make sure your details match your National Identification Number (NIN) exactly. If they don’t, your application can be delayed.

Step 2: Gather your documents

For a standard renewal, you will need:

  • your current Nigerian passport;
  • the printed, dated and signed application form;
  • a copy of your NIN slip;
  • your appointment booking;
  • a £20 UK postal order made payable to the Nigeria High Commission, London (the administrative fee); and
  • a prepaid Royal Mail Special Delivery envelope (C4 size) for your passport to be posted back.

Changing your name? It is only accepted after marriage or divorce, with documents to prove it. Deed poll is not accepted.

Step 3: Attend your appointment

Your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are taken at your appointment. The High Commission is at Nigeria House, 9 Northumberland Avenue, London WC2N 5BX. Passport submissions are taken from 9am to 1pm.

The High Commission also runs “intervention” sessions outside London. In November 2026 these are being held in Manchester and London (3 to 27 November).

Contactless renewal

If you are an adult renewing (not applying for the first time), you may be able to renew without visiting, using the self-biometric option. Send your old passport, application forms, payment receipt, a £20 postal order (with your name and phone number on the back) and a C4 self-addressed return envelope to the High Commission’s address above.

Getting your passport back

There is no in-person collection. Your new passport is posted to you in the prepaid envelope you provided.

Children under 18

Children need extra documents, including a parent’s Nigerian passport data page, a consent letter from both parents (or proof of sole custody) and a full birth certificate. Contactless renewal is not available for under-18s.

Lost or stolen passport?

A replacement costs £150 by postal order and needs a police report, a guarantor and other documents listed on the High Commission’s website.

Tips

  • Beware of the wrong fee. The High Commission says its administrative fee is £20; anyone wrongly charged £70 is being refunded £50.
  • Use only official websites. Don’t pay agents who promise to “speed up” your passport.
